Differences between tiles

There are many options when it comes to choosing a tile or stone for your project. There are many factors that come into play when deciding a tile. Durability, texture, color, stain resistant, chemical resistant, maintenance etc. Most home owners either go for a durable porcelain tile or some type of natural stone. Porcelain tile are your best choice when it comes to low maintenance and a variety of styles to choose from. Natural stone such as granite, marble, limestone, travertine and slate give off more of a elegant feel to any bathroom or kitchen.

Over the years many people have shifted to travertine flooring and large format tiles. Large format tiles include 18x18's, 20x20's, 24x24's and also 12x24's. These types of tiles give the desired floor or bathroom a larger feel due to the bigger pieces of tile. There is a big misconception when it comes to installing large format tile, for example; bigger tiles means lesser tiles to install and more square footage can be installed. This is totally not true.
Larger tiles take more time to install due to 3 major reasons
1. The sub floor or cement slab have to be almost perfectly flat.
2. Larger tiles are harder to work with (because of the size, awkward to handle and cut).
3. Each individual piece of tile is allot heavier compared to smaller tiles (takes a toll on our bodies and tools).

Most tile setters with little or no experience with large format tile will have a hard time keeping the tile flat within each piece of tile (also known as lippage). Also, when installing these type of tiles a different type of mortar needs to be used due to the weight of the tiles. A good quality medium bed needs to be used to keeps the tile from sagging, essentially creating lippage.

Divine Tile And Stone can provide these techniques and materials to give a long lasting, beautiful final result on any flooring project.
